Subhash Chandra Garg, Finance and Economics Affairs Secretary, is seeking out an early retirement from the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) after he had been transferred to the power ministry.
Atanu Chakraborty who had been the Department of Investment and Public Asset Management Secretary replaced Garg. This appointment was among the several reshuffles that took place on Wednesday wherein the secretaries of 12 government departments had been changed.
“Handed over charge of Economic Affairs today. Learnt so much in the Finance Ministry and Economic Affairs Dept. Will take charge in Power Ministry tomorrow. Have also applied for Voluntary Retirement from the IAS with effect from 31st October,” said Subhash Chandra Garg, in a tweet from the @SecretaryDEA handle. He also claimed that this was his last tweet from this particular handle.
He had taken over the position of the Department of Economic Affairs Secretary in 2017 but became the Finance Secretary in March 2019. Garg is considered to be the person behind the budget proposal that intended to raise about $10 Bn by selling sovereign bonds overseas which came under a lot of debate from experts including former Reserve Bank of India (RBI) governor Raghuram Rajan.
