SpiceJet appoints Sanjay Kumar as Executive Director to drive next growth phase

Aviation veteran Sanjay Kumar returns to SpiceJet to lead strategic expansion and operational transformation.
SpiceJet has tapped industry veteran Sanjay Kumar as its Executive Director, marking his return to the airline at a time when India’s aviation market is experiencing steady passenger growth and intensifying competition. Kumar assumed charge on November 3 and will report directly to Chairman and Managing Director Ajay Singh.
Kumar is no stranger to SpiceJet. He previously played a key leadership role in shaping its commercial strategy during the airline’s early high-growth years. His comeback follows a series of strategic moves by the carrier to stabilise operations, rebuild capacity, and sharpen its market position after a challenging period for the industry.
In a statement welcoming him, Singh highlighted Kumar’s deep sector understanding and hands-on leadership style. “His experience and insights into India’s aviation sector make him uniquely placed to help steer SpiceJet through its next phase of growth,” Singh noted.
Kumar’s mandate will span network expansion, revenue strategy, operational improvements, and digital transformation. The carrier has also started preparing for the busy winter travel period. As part of its seasonal expansion, three aircraft are joining the fleet — an Airbus A340 and two Boeing 737s — to help the airline handle higher passenger traffic through the festive and holiday months.
With over 30 years in the aviation business, Kumar has played a visible role in the evolution of India’s low-cost airline landscape. He spent more than a decade at IndiGo, working on commercial strategy and network planning through a period when the airline was rapidly expanding and firming up its position in the market. Following his time at IndiGo, he went on to hold senior roles at InterGlobe Technology Quotient and later at AirAsia India, in addition to working with other aviation-focused ventures over the years.
With his arrival, SpiceJet is looking to reinforce its top leadership as it works to regain scale, stabilise operations, and strengthen its financial position. The move comes at a time when domestic air travel remains strong, and airlines are sharpening their strategies to stay competitive and respond to shifting passenger expectations.
