Air India extends leave without pay scheme till June 2021

State-run carrier Air India has further extended its leave without pay scheme (LWP) for employees until the end of June. This marks almost a full year since the scheme was first introduced last year in July.

“A LWP/allowance scheme was introduced (on) July 14, 2020, and the same was extended up to March 31, 2021. It has now been decided to further extend the last date of applying under (this) scheme till June 30, 2021, and the effective date of LWP shall not be beyond one month of the expiration of the scheme,” a staff notice issued by AI GM (industrial relations) Meenakshi Kashyap stated.

The carrier had announced the scheme through a notice last July, amidst a host of cost-cutting measures as the COVID-19 pandemic impacted aviation businesses globally, further cutting into their weak financials.

Almost every other airline in India had also introduced leave without pay and salary cuts while some had also laid off staff.  Air India had first extended the scheme till March 31 2021 and then till June 30.

Meanwhile, the government hopes to finalize the carrier’s new owner also by concluding the divestment process by June.
