Govt to focus on the quality of skill training: Rajiv Pratap Ruddy

In a press conference in Delhi on Tuesday, the Minister of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Rajiv Pratap Rudy, and his team informed reporters of the change in government strategy. They would now be focusing more on the quality of training imparted, and not on any numbers.

According to a media report, Rajesh Aggarwal, Director General of Training and Joint Secretary in the skills ministry said, “We don’t want to chase any number. Whether it is 150 million by the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) and 350 million by ministries—we are delinking it, not attaching any number.”

Rajiv Pratap Rudy agreed and added, “It will be demand driven than supply driven.”

In all of the past three years of the NDA government, the ministry has only met its skill development target only once. Though the initial goal was to train 500 million people by 2022, and for which numerous subsidiaries within the ministry: NSDC, NSDA, and Skill Development Fund, and which were also focused on helping government transform the skill development sector from nonprofit to for-profit, the government is still short of achieving its target.

Also, the ministry had given out loans to the private skill training providers, but much of the loans provided have turned into non-performing assets. On being asked by the reporters about private players duping poor people on the pretext of providing them employment, the ministry informed that it has filed FIRs against many such agencies.

The ministry and its subsidiaries have trained 1.17 crore aspirants in various skill sets since the launch of Skill India mission in July 2015, shared by the minister as part of its achievements during the conference.
