National Thermal Power Corporation Limited (NTPC) has rolled out a slew of L&D initiatives as it seeks to align to its people strategy with the changing business environment. The initiatives include the Young Leaders programme for people with 10-15 years of experience. Individuals selected for the program are taken through 10 different learning modules to provide them exposure across various areas. People are also being given exposure to different jobs through job rotation, with an aim to provide experiential learning.

Rou added that the organization is leveraging technology in terms of reaching out to people in different power projects across the country with Harvard Business Publishing designing the learning module. It plans to reach out to 2,000 young executives in the second phase.

The programme which started in October 2017 has covered upto 2,000 executives in the first phase with NTPC monitoring the learning progress of each learner through analytics. It plans to reach out to 2,000 young executives in the second phase.

At the same time, the organization is targeting senior people with management development programmes at various IIMs and ISB Hyderabad exclusively designed for NTPC. This is targeted at about 350 senior people who will occupy leadership roles.

For officials at the level of executive directors/general managers etc., NTPC has also tied up with the Harvard Business School. Around 150 people have been covered through this initiative.

The initiatives come as the organization gears up to revamp HR policies in order to deliver required business outcomes. In this light, the 15-month programme for energy professionals by the NTPC School of Business launched a few years ago is being revamped. NTPC will now be partnering with IIM Ahmedabad to take it to the next level with IIMA faculty helping it to design the programme.
