The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has stated that the number of jobs which are can be attributed to the tourism industry will increase in India for the next decade. Currently, there are 42.9 million jobs existing in the industry, but this number will rise to 52.3 million in the coming decade.

According to the report, India is currently the seventh largest travel and tourism industry in the world. Also, the total contribution of the industry to the Indian economy was INR 15.2 trillion in 2017. This figure is expected to rise to INR 32 trillion by 2028.

Gloria Guevara, president and CEO, WTTC, said, “Tourism creates jobs, drives economic growth and helps build better societies. This is particularly clear in India which is forecasted to be one of the fastest-growing tourism economies in the world over the next decade adding 10 million jobs and hundreds of millions of dollars to the economy by 2028.”

She has also attributed the increase in the number of jobs to the proactive measures which have been taken by the government to attract the foreign tourists and to position India as a destination of choice.

Guevara has also further suggested that if India adds more secondary airports, then India could help and enhance the travel and tourism economy for the South East Asia region as well.
