IT major Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), now has crossed the 500,000 employee mark and it plans to recruit more people in FY22 than it did in the previous fiscal year.

In a media briefing, Milind Lakkad, CHRO, TCS said, “Last year, we hired 40,000 associates from campuses in India, this year the number may be even more. Similarly, in the US, we hired 2,000 employees from campuses in FY21 and the number is likely to be higher this year. The story will be the same for Latin America as well.”

For the first quarter of FY22, TCS added 20,409 more associates, taking its total headcount to 509,058.

Lakkad said,“ The TCS family crossed a new milestone, with over 500,000 associates this quarter. We continue to attract the best talent across the globe with a net addition of 20,409 associates to the TCS family this quarter.”

He also added that over the past five years, the company has been beefing up its local workforce in major markets, hence despite travel restrictions during the pandemic, the IT major's business was not affected.

Rajesh Gopinathan, CEO & MD, TCS, also shared that having such a huge employee base is like going through a “living experiment”.

“We are continuously exploring what is the best we can do with this size of our workforce. The question is how we structure ourselves in a dynamic changing world. Typically, a professional’s life spans over 40 years, within which they have to be prepared to go through about 5-6 tech cycles. Having an organization that thinks about their upskilling and reskilling is a very important aspect for a professional,” Gopinathan added

In this direction, the company continues to focus on talent development initiatives, with employees logging in over 10 million learning hours in Q1. Over 478,000 employees have been trained in Agile methods and over 407,000 employees have been trained on multiple new technologies.

Meanwhile, the firm also reported a high attrition rate of 8.6 per cent for Q1. However the company feels it would not affect its business and is renewing its focus on expanding talent development program to other geographies as well. In March this year, TCS gave a second salary hike in six months to its employees.
