Wang urged governments and industry to collaborate on four foundational pillars of artificial intelligence, talent, energy, data and compute, and warned against fragmented regulation.

Alexandr Wang, Chief AI Officer at Meta Platforms, on Thursday announced that the company will roll out a new generation of artificial intelligence models this year, with a strong focus on serving local needs in India and across the Global South.

Speaking at the ‘India AI Impact Summit’ in the national capital, Wang said the first models are expected within the next few months and will be deeply integrated into Meta’s product ecosystem.

“We’re releasing new models this year, with the first coming in the next couple of months. These will be deeply integrated with our products in a way we’re really excited about,” he said.

Focus on localisation

Wang stressed that the next wave of AI must move beyond a one-size-fits-all approach and instead be designed around regional realities.

“I don’t want these amazing technologies to be one-size-fits-all. I want them to serve your needs, designed for the challenges and opportunities that are unique to India, to societies across the Global South, and all over the world,” he said.

He added that India already has world-class developers building solutions to address large societal challenges, positioning the country as a key innovation hub.

Call for policy clarity and investment

Highlighting the conditions required to unlock AI’s full potential, Wang said success will depend on getting policy frameworks right alongside sustained investment.

He urged governments and industry to collaborate on four foundational pillars of artificial intelligence, talent, energy, data and compute, and warned against fragmented regulation.

“We need policies that encourage innovation, not patchworks of inconsistent regulations that make it harder,” Wang said, calling for bold national strategies and deeper public-private partnerships.

Vision of “personal superintelligence”

Outlining Meta’s long-term roadmap, Wang described the company’s ambition to build what he termed “personal superintelligence”, highly personalised AI systems that understand individual users.

“Our vision is personal superintelligence, AI that knows you, your goals, your interests, and helps you with whatever you’re focused on doing,” he said.

He envisioned AI assistants capable of helping users manage complex schedules, create customised health plans covering diet, exercise and sleep, track personal and professional goals, coordinate events, and plan travel.

Such systems, Wang added, could ultimately free up time and mental bandwidth, enabling people to pursue hobbies and become more engaged in their communities.

Collaboration key to inclusive AI

Wang concluded by emphasising that inclusive AI development will require close alignment between governments and the private sector.

“That’s only going to be possible if the public and private sectors are on the same side. We need to be partners, working together in this period of openness and collaboration with a sense of shared ambition,” he said.
