Bengaluru: Popular destination for blue-collar workers

A recent report by BetterPlace reveals that Bengaluru is the most popular destination attracting as much as 7-8 million blue-collar workers. The report which is based on the sample set of 198,539 out of the estimated 2 million blue-collar workers found that the migrants are typically younger.

Most of these migrants hail from Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Odisha, and other parts of northern and north-eastern states.

The common job-profiles the migrants are hired for include Drivers (41 percent), Delivery Workers (32 percent), Security Guards (9 percent), Housekeeping Staff (9 percent). The report also found that only 8 percent of the migrant workforce is women against 92 percent of the male migrant workforce.

Reflecting on the salary trends, the report noted that about one-third population gets a salary between Rs. 15,000- 20,000 per month.

BetterPlace shared in media that due to the absence of a formal hiring system or a database that captures experience, there is no systematic rise in the compensation of the blue-collar workers.

Pravin Agarwala, CEO, BetterPlace shared in media, “92 percent of this segment is unorganized, but many sectors here are growing at 20 percent-plus annually. While Delhi and Mumbai were the most popular places for such migrants earlier, there is a big shift towards Bengaluru among new blue-collar migrants.”
