Nokia labour heads agree to talk

Labour representatives agreed, in a meeting on Monday, to talk to Nokia India on settlement packages for the last batch of employees remaining in the Sriperumbudur factory. What remains now is a severance package that needs to be agreed upon for 1,100 employees. The acceptance on the employees' part is a climb-down from their earlier demand to keep the Nokia factory open. Supported by trade unionists and political outfits, the employees had staged protests and even demanded a takeover by the government. The management-labour talks were mediated by assistant commissioner of labour Dharma seelan who pushed both parties to work toward a mutually agreeable solution.
