When Sriharsha Majety launched Swiggy in 2014, the idea of ordering food online was a novel concept in India. With zero orders on Day 1, the future of the venture seemed uncertain. A decade later, Swiggy thrives, reflecting Majety's vision and the support of its early partners.
Majety fondly recalls the camaraderie and shared vision that developed with Swiggy's early partners. "Thanks to those early adopters who didn’t just join us but became core to our journey," Majety recalls.
Majety, in a LinkedIn post, notes that convincing restaurants to take a leap of faith was no easy task, but the trust and support he received from pioneers like Truffles, Anand Sweets, and Hole in the Wall were instrumental in shaping Swiggy's trajectory.
Swiggy's success story is intertwined with the broader growth of the Indian food services market. While the overall market is projected to reach INR 900-1000K crore by 2030, online food delivery is expected to grow at a faster pace of 18% CAGR.
Swiggy's contribution to the market is expected to reach 20% by 2030, reflecting its strong position and the increasing popularity of food delivery services among Indian consumers.
The journey wasn't without its hurdles. Technological limitations, logistical challenges, and a nascent market presented constant obstacles. However, Majety's belief in the potential of food delivery and the dedication of his team kept Swiggy afloat.
A turning point came with the success of early adopters. As these restaurants experienced increased business and positive feedback from customers, more and more establishments joined the platform. Swiggy's growth accelerated, and "Swiggy it" became a household phrase.
Today, Swiggy boasts a network of over 300,000 restaurant partners across India. The company has transformed the way people dine, offering convenience and choice at the touch of a button. Majety attributes this success to the collaborative efforts of Swiggy's team, its restaurant partners, and the millions of customers who have embraced the platform.
Between 2019 and 2023, the penetration of online food ordering increased from 8% to 12%, representing a 2.8 times growth compared to the overall food services market. This growth is largely attributed to the rise of platforms like Swiggy.
As Swiggy celebrates its 10th anniversary, Majety looks ahead with optimism. "The best is yet to come," he says. "We are committed to continuing our journey of innovation, delivering unparalleled convenience, and fostering strong partnerships with our restaurant partners."
