Gurgaon paralyzed after RICO workers' strike turns violent

The industrial belt in the city of Gurgaon in Haryana was paralyzed after the clash between agitating workers of Rico Auto Industries Ltd. left one dead and five injured. The strike called on 20 October brought the industrial activity in that area to a near standstill as over one lakh workers from nearby manufacturing units joined the agitating RICO workers who were demanding recognition of their labor union. The strike once again exposes the gap between the senior management and working class in Indian industrial landscape. On one hand, there are the industry leaders demanding more liberal labor policies while on the other hand there are instances of growing militarization of labor unions that carry eternal suspicion and hatred of the liberal trade policies. It’s not surprising that the agitation comes within months after strike called by Air India and Jet Airways employee associations crippled the airline industry and the brutal killing of HR VP of Pricol Ltd. in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu by disgruntled workers of the company.
