In a candid conversation with People Matters, Sunil Gupta, MD & CEO, Avis India shared his thoughts on leadership and the one leader he looks up to. The industry veteran also highlighted the key learnings he picked up from his team.
Who is the one leader you look up to?
I will go for Satya Nadela because he has single-handedly changed the image of Microsoft as a big tech bully personified by Steve Ballmer to a collaborative workplace that listens to customers and engages positively with regulators worldwide.
What is the one leadership lesson you learned on the go as a People Leader?
Leaders should go the extra mile to ensure their teams meet their work objectives - a leader invested in his or her team’s success can work wonders!
How digitally ready are you as a leader on a scale of one to ten?
Being digitally unready is a death wish for a business leader in this day and age. IT has been democratized through the cloud and smartphone apps and tech offers unimaginable possibilities at a manageable cost.
Which was the last book you read on leadership?
The one which has left a deep impact on me is “ Good to Great” by Jim Collins.
What matters to you most, effort or outcome?
Choosing one or the other is a fallacy. The outcome is critical, but only outcome through the right efforts counts.
Three key learnings that you have picked up from your team.
Feedback not given immediately is stale fish.
Delegate – and leave them alone!
Never let the past color the future.
What’s the one most important factor you consider when hiring someone?
Collaborative and curious – neither a one-man-show nor a know-it-all.
What sort of leader would your team say that you are?
Uncompromising yet supportive.
