Vineet Agrawal, CEO of Wipro Consumer Care and Lighting has been a Wiproite for a very long period of time. Being the Chief Executive of the company, he feels hiring a good team is highly essential for any leader. In his interaction, he also shared how digital-ready he is as a leader.
Who is the one leader you look up to?
Azim Premji. From him I have learned humility, hard work and how to keep pace with things that are happening around you in business.
What is the one leadership lesson you learned on the go as a People Leader?
You need to hire a good team. They need to add value to your leadership. Your team members shouldn't be your clones. They should be better than you. With a good team, you are up and running.
How digitally ready are you as a leader on a scale of one to ten?
In the consumer business, digital readiness is a moving target.
Which was the last book you read on leadership?
I haven’t read anything specific on leadership recently. But whenever I meet CEOs and leaders, I seek to understand what makes them tick.
What matters to you most, effort or outcome?
It is not either or. Both are important. Effort without an outcome is pointless and outcome without effort is unsustainable.

Sales skills, an infectious enthusiasm and never say die attitude.
What’s the one most important factor you consider when hiring someone?
I look for self-confidence. That is a must. It helps in taking risks and stretching beyond what one thinks one is capable of.
What sort of leader would your team say that you are?
My team can answer this better. I think it is a job well done if they believe once goals are set, I give them the freedom to implement, monitor continuously and support whenever they need it.
