If reports are to be believed, then every fourth migrant in Singapore is an Indian. As per a report (published in The Straits Times), Indian nationals, which have doubled from 200,000 two years back to 400,000 currently, now account close to 25% of the total 1.8 million foreigners and permanent residents’ population in Singapore. Also, the number of Indian setting up companies in Singapore has increased two-fold from 1,500 in 2006 to 3,000 currently, with most of the businesses set up in the field of IT, Finance, Trading and F&B (food & beverages) sector. While the non-regulatory and friendly environment of this island country is one reason why it is attracting Indian nationals, the wide-spread use of Tamil is acting as another impetus for Indians from the southern states to consider shifting there. Also, the expansion of sectors like engineering, finance, marine, IT, et al is attracting skilled and semi-skilled people from India to Singapore.
