# 25 Godrej Consumer Products: Managing through ‘tough love'

As a leader among India’s FMCG, Godrej Consumer Products (GCPL) is driven by its mission to continuously enhance the quality of life of consumers. Customer and people centricity are at the core of GCPL and it is this approach that brings alive the promise of a ‘brighter living’ among its stakeholders. Driven by a compelling 2020 vision, the organization continues to focus on building a strong team with strong values and clearly defined goals.

‘Tough love’ is the people philosophy that each manager is expected to live and practice. This stems from a basic belief that people management is a two-way process. Employees have certain expectations and aspirations and the organization will help in achieving them. The process is tough as it is meritocratic and organizational expectations from high performers keep going up. ‘Love’ symbolizes the support the organization will provide to coach, mentor, and to reward high performers.

Among multiple initiatives which enable the creation of a unique culture at GCPL is its focus on ‘leadership development’. This is built around the ‘Godrej Capability Factors’ comprising of leading self, leading others and leading business. Further, ‘Bedhadak Bolo’ is an initiative which salutes the spirit of expression and innovation. A unique ‘profit sharing’ program built around the principle of EVA forms a unifying glue which stimulates performance through razor like focus on goals. And ‘Just Like That’ is an informal platform for employees to celebrate occasions, while ‘Monday Mania’ is a campaign against Monday morning blues - an initiative aimed towards making the organization a fun place to work.

The focus on building an organization that is merit based, empowering and inclusive makes GCPL a great workplace.
