Castrol India appoints Saugata Basuray as interim chief executive

The company names long-serving executive Saugata Basuray interim CEO from January 1, 2026, alongside his current whole-time director role.
Castrol India has appointed Saugata Basuray as its interim chief executive officer with effect from January 1, 2026, as the lubricants maker manages a leadership transition at its Indian operations.
The appointment was announced through a regulatory filing, Indian Chemical News reported. Basuray will continue in his existing role as whole-time director and head of B2C sales, with his revised designation being whole-time director and interim CEO.
Basuray brings more than 25 years of experience within the Castrol and bp ecosystem. He joined the company in 1999 as a management trainee after completing his MBA from Symbiosis Institute of Business Management, Pune, and has since progressed through a series of senior leadership roles.
During his tenure at Castrol India, Basuray has served as head of marketing and vice-president for the B2C business, playing a key role in brand strategy and consumer-facing growth initiatives. His career has also included several international assignments, underscoring his exposure to diverse markets and operating environments.
He previously served as managing director of PT Castrol Indonesia and as country sales director for Castrol Philippines. Basuray has also held a strategic role at Castrol’s global headquarters in the UK, where he worked on broader business and brand initiatives, according to Indian Chemical News.
Industry analysts note that interim chief executive appointments are often used to ensure continuity while boards evaluate longer-term leadership plans. Reuters has reported in earlier coverage that multinational subsidiaries in India increasingly rely on internal leaders with global exposure to manage transitions without disrupting operations.
Castrol India, a subsidiary of UK-based energy major bp, operates in a competitive lubricants market shaped by changing mobility trends, regulatory pressures and evolving consumer demand. The company has not disclosed a timeline for appointing a permanent chief executive.
For now, Basuray is expected to oversee day-to-day operations and strategic execution while balancing his existing commercial responsibilities, as Castrol India prepares for its next phase of leadership and business priorities.
