Veteran banker with over three decades at SBI to serve as MD until September 2028.
The Government of India has appointed Ravi Ranjan as Managing Director of State Bank of India, the country’s largest public sector lender, marking a key leadership transition at the bank.
Ranjan assumed charge on Monday following a government notification, SBI said in a regulatory filing. He succeeds Vinay M. Tonse, who completed his tenure as Managing Director on November 30, 2025.
According to the notification, Ranjan’s appointment will run until the date of his superannuation on September 30, 2028, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
Ranjan was previously serving as Deputy Managing Director at SBI, where he headed the Corporate Accounts Group (CAG). He brings more than 33 years of experience across a wide range of banking functions, including corporate and retail banking, treasury operations, international banking and capital markets.
Over his career at SBI and its subsidiaries, Ranjan has held several senior leadership roles. These include President and Chief Operating Officer of SBICAP Securities, Chief General Manager of the Chennai Circle, Vice President and Head – Syndications at SBI’s Hong Kong operations, and Deputy Managing Director and Head (Equity) at Global Markets. He has also served as General Manager heading Network-II of the Bangalore Circle and as Deputy General Manager and Special Secretary to the Chairman at SBI’s corporate centre.
On the academic front, Ranjan holds an MBA from the Management Development Institute (MDI), Gurugram, and a Master’s degree in Botany from Patna University. He is also a Certified Associate of the Indian Institute of Bankers (CAIIB).
SBI’s board is chaired by the bank’s chairman and supported by four managing directors. Ranjan’s appointment comes at a time when the lender continues to focus on balance-sheet strength, credit growth and capital optimisation amid shifting macroeconomic conditions.
