Appointments
Phanindranath Kakarla to lead ARCIL as CEO and MD from March

ARCIL appoints Phanindranath Kakarla as CEO and MD as Pallav Mohapatra steps down after completing his term leading the asset reconstruction firm.
Asset Reconstruction Company (India) Limited (ARCIL) has appointed Phanindranath Kakarla as Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, effective March 9, marking a leadership transition at one of India’s earliest asset reconstruction firms.
Kakarla succeeds Pallav Mohapatra, who is stepping down after completing his term as CEO and managing director, according to an announcement reported by exchange4media.
The leadership change comes as ARCIL continues to expand its role in India’s stressed asset resolution market, working with banks and financial institutions to acquire and restructure distressed loans.
Leadership transition at ARCIL
Kakarla joined ARCIL on April 2, 2025 as President, and worked alongside Mohapatra over the past year as part of a planned leadership transition, exchange4media reported.
He brings experience in the acquisition and resolution of stressed assets, a core area of ARCIL’s operations in India’s asset reconstruction sector.
“I am honoured to take on the responsibility of leading ARCIL at an important stage in its journey,” Kakarla said in a statement. “ARCIL has played a pioneering role in shaping India’s asset reconstruction industry and remains a strategic partner for banks and financial institutions.”
He added that his focus will be to strengthen ARCIL’s leadership position and deliver long-term value for stakeholders.
Mohapatra’s tenure focused on operational strengthening
Mohapatra had led ARCIL since March 2021, during which the company focused on strengthening governance, operational capabilities and strategic growth initiatives in the asset reconstruction business.
With more than four decades of experience in India’s banking and financial services sector, Mohapatra played a key role in strengthening the firm’s institutional framework and expanding its capabilities in resolving stressed assets.
Before joining ARCIL, he held senior leadership roles within the Edelweiss Group, a financial services conglomerate with a significant presence in the distressed asset and credit markets.
Board backs succession plan
ARCIL’s board said the appointment of Kakarla forms part of a planned succession strategy developed over the past year.
“We are delighted to welcome Mr. Phanindranath Kakarla as CEO and Managing Director,” ARCIL chairman Narayanan Subramaniam said in a statement reported by exchange4media.
“With his leadership experience and deep understanding of financial services and asset resolution, we are confident he will lead ARCIL into its next phase of growth and value creation,” Subramaniam said, adding that the board appreciated Mohapatra’s contributions during a transformative period for the company.
A key player in India’s stressed asset market
ARCIL is among the earliest asset reconstruction companies established in India following regulatory reforms that allowed specialised institutions to acquire and resolve non-performing assets from banks.
Such firms play a central role in helping lenders clean up balance sheets by purchasing distressed loans and attempting to restructure or recover value from them.
As India’s banking sector continues to manage legacy bad loans and new stress cycles, asset reconstruction companies remain a key component of the country’s financial resolution ecosystem.
With Kakarla now taking charge, the company is expected to continue focusing on asset resolution strategies and partnerships with financial institutions to address stressed credit exposures across sectors.
