HR veteran returns to Sonata Software to lead global people and talent strategy.

Sonata Software has appointed Balaji Kumar as Chief Human Resources Officer, bringing back a seasoned HR leader to steer its global people strategy at a time of ongoing digital transformation.

Kumar, who will be based at the company’s Bengaluru headquarters, will be responsible for leading Sonata’s global people and talent function, according to a regulatory filing.

This marks his second stint at Sonata Software, where he previously served as CHRO between April 2022 and May 2025.

Leadership continuity with deep HR experience

Kumar brings over three decades of experience across industries, including technology, financial services and manufacturing. His return is seen as a move to ensure continuity in people leadership as Sonata sharpens its focus on growth and capability building.

Prior to rejoining Sonata, Kumar was Chief Human Resources Officer at One97 Communications, the parent company of Paytm, where he led HR strategy during a period of organisational transition.

His earlier career includes senior HR roles at L&T Infotech, Larsen & Toubro, Microsoft, Murugappa Group, Citibank, Coca-Cola and Unilever, reflecting a broad exposure to both global and India-centric organisations.

Focus on talent in a competitive tech landscape

The appointment comes as IT services firms continue to navigate shifting talent dynamics, driven by digital transformation, automation and evolving client demand.

For Sonata, which has been positioning itself as a digital engineering and transformation partner, strengthening leadership in human capital management is critical to sustaining growth and execution.

Industry observers note that CHRO roles in technology firms are increasingly focused on workforce agility, reskilling and aligning talent strategies with business outcomes.

Kumar holds a master’s degree in Personnel Management and Industrial Relations from the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, as well as a law degree from Osmania University.

His appointment signals Sonata’s intent to reinforce its people strategy amid a competitive talent market.

As IT services firms recalibrate for the next phase of digital growth, leadership in HR is expected to play a central role in balancing scale, skills and organisational culture.
