Former Trai chief appointed principal secretary to PM

The new government has changed a law by executive fiat to clear the appointment of Nripendra Misra as principal secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. President Pranab Mukherjee has signed an ordinance that amended section 5 (8) of the Trai Act of 1997 that barred any member of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) from holding a subsequent government position, a person familiar with the development said, requesting anonymity. The move will have to be approved in Parliament within six months. Misra, a 1967 batch Indian Administrative Service officer from the Uttar Pradesh cadre, was chairman of Trai from 2006 to 2009.
