India’s homegrown e-commerce marketplace, Flipkart, has announced a collaboration with the Army Welfare Placement Organisation (AWPO) through its new initiative ‘FlipMarch’, aimed at integrating ex-military personnel into their workforce. This initiative is focused on offering a new career path to ex-servicemen.

According to AWPO, more than 50,000 servicemen in the age bracket of 30 - 40 years retire every year, and they are all well trained in several aspects across logistics, crisis handling, workforce management, making them an ideal choice for large organizations.

Commenting on the collaboration, AWPO’s Managing Director, Major General Deepak Sapra, said, “This partnership brings together two influential service providers serving the nation - a leading homegrown e-commerce marketplace and another providing opportunities to Indian Army Veterans. This Agreement between Flipkart and AWPO also exemplifies the dedication of both the organizations in leveraging each other's strengths and providing meaningful opportunities to the army veterans. We look forward to a continued relationship with Flipkart.”

Under ‘FlipMarch’, Flipkart will extend an opportunity to former Defence Services personnel to join the firm in multiple roles ranging from supply chain to training and guidance, among others.

Selected personnel will be provided with customized induction, sensitization programs, and curated learning programs, enabling a seamless transition into the corporate world, while also getting familiarized with the finer nuances of the industry.

Across its 12,000 strong workforce at corporate offices, and 1.8 lakh employees in the supply chain, Flipkart already boasts of a significant representation of ex-Army personnel who are playing a key role in the day-to-day functioning of the company. With ‘FlipMarch’, the organization strengthens its commitment and offering to those who risked their lives to serve and protect the nation.

Sharing his thoughts on the new initiative, Flipkart’s Chief People Officer, Krishna Raghavan, noted, “Flipkart is a socially responsible organization which works towards the development of the society and its stakeholders. We have several ex-members of the Armed forces leading important charters here at Flipkart, and we are delighted to announce FlipMarch to take this initiative ahead. The loyalty, discipline and risk-taking ability of the members of the Armed forces are of great value to Flipkart and will play a crucial role in building a robust organization”.

Flipkart's Chief Corporate Affairs Officer, Rajneesh Kumar added, “Flipkart understands the importance of bringing together stakeholders as we move ahead in building a more responsible corporate culture. The inclusion of ex-Army personnel in our workforce stands as a testimony to our commitment towards the armed forces and will set the tone for a long-standing relationship. Their assimilation into our value chain will enable us to become more agile with their ability to make quick decisions and deliver results in a constantly evolving environment.”

As organizations strive to build more inclusive workplaces, military veterans remain a relatively untapped talent pool, despite the magnitude of skills and capabilities they possess. Programs like ‘FlipMarch’ provide a much needed bridge to ex-servicemen for a smooth integration into the corporate world, while also bolstering the competence of an organization with a refreshing influx of talent.
