Executives getting into 'shop while you work' habit

Consumerism has invaded the workplace with thousands of executives getting into the 'shop while you work' habit, leaving employers flustered about the loss of productivity. Second browsers with e-tailing sites remain surreptitiously open through the day, quick trips are made to the reception to take delivery of goodies ordered online followed by trips to the washroom to try out the new garments. Packages are stuffed under the table, followed by long conversations about the day's prized acquisitions. These are all eating into work time. It is turning out to be a Catch-22 situation. Jabong.com founder and MD Praveen Sinha says online traffic at his site often peaks at 10 AM, a sheepish admission that many shoppers are probably logging into his site soon after they begin their work day. There is another peak at 5 PM, presumably executives closing a deal before finishing work for the day. "Above 55% of the delivery takes place at the office address in metros," he says.
