CIL's five trade unions likely to go on strike

Five trade unions that represent almost 90% of Coal India's (CIL) workforce are likely to go on an indefinite strike from January in protest against the government's "unilateral" decision to allot coal blocks to private companies for commercial exploitation. The unions said the government has displayed sheer arrogance by taking "critical decisions" concerning the sector without consulting or involving them in the process. "Despite repeated requests for involving workmen unions while taking critical policy decisions, the government has taken a series of vital decisions on its own," said S Q Zama, secretary-general of Indian National Mine Workers' Federation.
