GM CEO likely to face angry workers at Halol plant

General Motors CEO Mary Barra, who's had to fend off accusations in the US that the company covered up safety issues in the years before she took over, may be faced with complaints from employees over poor working conditions at the auto maker's Gujarat plant in case an expected visit to India goes ahead later this month. "Occupational health hazard at GM facilities is a matter of global concern," said Nihil Mehta, secretary of the Indian National Trade Union Congress, representing GM workers at its Halol plant, where it has a total installed capacity of 2.5 lakh cars that's understood to be under-utilised. Mehta cited the campaign by ASOTRECOL, the Association of Injured Workers and Ex-Workers of General Motors Colmotores, based in Colom bia -a grouping of 68 people who say they were hurt at the GM plant in the country and then fired because they couldn't do their jobs. Mehta said 269 workers at the Halol plant face health issues arising out of their duties at the auto plant.
