Mastercard Asia Pacific president Ari Sarker steps down – Successor announced

Ari Sarker to leave his role at the end of 2025; Richard Wormald to take over as President, Asia Pacific
Mastercard has announced a leadership transition in its Asia Pacific operations, with Ari Sarker set to step down as President at the end of 2025. After more than a decade leading the region, Sarker will move into an advisory role, focusing on strategic initiatives and mentoring regional leadership to ensure a smooth handover.
Ari Sarker’s tenure has been marked by significant growth across the Asia Pacific markets. Under his leadership, Mastercard strengthened partnerships with governments, fintechs, and enterprises, while fostering a collaborative corporate culture. His strategic guidance has left a lasting impact on both the organisation and its people.
“Ari’s leadership in the region has been transformative,” Mastercard said. “He has championed innovation, inclusion, and built deep relationships across the ecosystem. We are confident that his continued involvement in an advisory capacity will ensure a smooth transition and sustained growth.”
Effective 1 January 2026, Richard Wormald, currently Division President, Australasia, will succeed Sarker as President, Asia Pacific. Wormald brings extensive experience in regional leadership and a strong track record of driving performance, innovation, and stakeholder engagement.
Reflecting on the transition, Sarker said, “It’s been an incredible journey leading Mastercard in Asia Pacific. I’m proud of what we’ve built together and grateful to the teams, partners, and customers who have made it all possible. Richard is a trusted colleague and a thoughtful leader—I am confident he will continue to move the business forward with purpose and care.”
Wormald added, “I am honoured to step into this role and build on the strong foundation Ari has created. Asia Pacific is a dynamic and diverse region, and I look forward to working with our teams and partners to continue growing and delivering meaningful impact.”
To support a smooth handover, Sarker and Wormald will work closely together over the coming months, engaging stakeholders across markets through joint appearances and shared communications.
In a related move, Paul Monnington will join Mastercard in January 2026 as Division President, Australasia, succeeding Wormald. Monnington brings extensive experience in retail payments and fintech innovation, having led Woolworths’ Wpay business and held senior positions at Woolworths Group and National Australia Bank.
“I’m excited to be joining Mastercard at such a pivotal time,” Monnington said. “The company’s focus on innovation, inclusion, and customer partnership aligns with my vision, and I look forward to contributing to continued success in Australasia.”
Monnington will report to Wormald and become part of the Mastercard Asia Pacific Leadership Team. In his new role, he will oversee operations across Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific Islands.
This leadership transition highlights Mastercard’s focus on strong, values-driven leadership and its commitment to shaping the future of commerce in the Asia Pacific region. With experienced leaders in place and a clear strategic vision, the company is well-positioned to accelerate innovation, deepen partnerships, and unlock new opportunities across the region.
The changes reflect a commitment to continuity while introducing fresh perspectives.
Sarker’s advisory role will help nurture the next generation of leaders, while Wormald and Monnington bring energy and experience to their new responsibilities. Together, the leadership team aims to maintain momentum, deliver measurable value, and drive innovation in one of the world’s most dynamic regions.
Mastercard’s Asia Pacific operations remain focused on creating inclusive, secure, and innovative payment solutions. With the leadership transition underway, the company is set to continue strengthening its footprint across key markets, delivering value for clients, partners, and stakeholders alike.
