Twitter’s CMO and head of communications Leslie Berland will now also be heading the human resources team as the new ‘Head of People’ for the company, according to a Recode report. She will be taking up a role that has been unoccupied for almost six months, since erstwhile chief human resources officer Renee Atwood left Twitter. She will continue to head Twitter’s marketing and communications, the role in which she joined Twitter last year.

Explaining the reasoning behind the expansion of Berland’s role, Twitter issued the following statement:-

As a company, we focus on customer engagement and experience end-to-end in a way that’s uniquely Twitter. To bring the best of Twitter forward, both inside and out, we want to apply that same way of thinking to our people. As CMO, Leslie puts the customer at the center, and she has always approached her work by listening and learning from our people first, and radiating outward. Her leadership will strengthen the synergies that exist between our People, Marketing, and Communications teams and better align our culture with our brand.”

Twitter has also appointed Jennifer Christie as its new VP of human resources. Formerly senior vice president at American Express (where Berland also worked previously), Jennifer Christie will report to Berland and manage the day-to-day team responsibilities.

Twitter VP HR appointed

Leslie Berland’s appointment fills up the second major vacancy for Twitter, after Ned Segal joined as the CFO last month. Prior to that, Twitter had also hired former assistant press secretary for the National Security Council Emily Horne in the role of its new Communications Director.
