The head of WhatsApp's India payment business, Manesh Mahatme, has quit the company after more than a year. He will now join Amazon India, as director of product in the e-commerce division.

Mahatme's decision to leave the Meta Platforms-owned company came at a critical time when the company is locking horns with noted players such as Alphabet Inc's Google Pay, Ant Group-backed Paytm, Walmart's PhonePe, and others.

During Manesh Mahatme's stint at WhatsApp Pay, the company won regulatory approval to more than double its payments offering to 100 million users in India, its biggest market with more than half a billion users overall.

He joined WhatsApp Pay in April 2021. Prior to Meta Platforms-owned company, Mahatme was associated with Amazon Pay India between 2014 and 2021, according to his LinkedIn profile.
