Assam lines up Rs 1 lakh crore power projects with potential to create over 30,000 jobs

State reviews investment pipeline under Advantage Assam 2.0 as power projects target capacity expansion and employment generation.
Assam is preparing to accelerate power sector investments worth more than Rs 1 lakh crore, with proposed projects expected to generate over 10,000 MW of electricity and create more than 30,000 jobs, according to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
The announcement comes as the state government intensifies efforts to convert investment commitments secured through Advantage Assam 2.0 into projects on the ground. Sarma said the administration is actively identifying and removing implementation bottlenecks while closely tracking proposals to prevent delays.
According to statements made by the Chief Minister following a review meeting, around 75 per cent of the Rs 5 lakh crore investment pipeline announced under Advantage Assam 2.0 has already moved to various stages of firming up.
Power sector emerges as a major investment focus
The state government has placed particular emphasis on the power sector as part of its broader economic and industrial development plans.
Sarma chaired a dedicated review meeting on power projects and said the proposed investments could significantly expand Assam's electricity generation capacity while supporting employment creation.
Key figures highlighted by the state government include:
• More than Rs 1 lakh crore in planned power sector investments
• Over 10,000 MW of potential power generation capacity
• More than 30,000 jobs expected from proposed projects
• Rs 5 lakh crore overall investment pipeline under Advantage Assam 2.0
• Around 75 per cent of proposals progressing through different stages of development
The Chief Minister said the state is reviewing projects individually to ensure administrative hurdles do not slow execution.
Government seeks faster conversion of proposals into projects
The latest review forms part of a wider effort to move investment announcements towards implementation.
Sarma stated that the government is monitoring proposals closely and focusing on clearing obstacles that could delay project execution.
According to the Chief Minister, the objective is to ensure investment commitments translate into tangible economic outcomes, including employment generation, infrastructure development and industrial expansion.
The review also reflects the state's emphasis on project monitoring and administrative coordination as large-scale investments move through approval and implementation stages.
Strategy linked to industrial growth ambitions
The planned expansion of power infrastructure is expected to support Assam's long-term industrialisation strategy.
Reliable electricity supply remains a key requirement for attracting manufacturing investments, supporting industrial clusters and enabling business expansion. The proposed projects are intended to strengthen the state's energy infrastructure while improving its capacity to meet rising demand.
Sarma said Assam currently depends on electricity sourced from other states but outlined a longer-term objective of transforming the state into a power-surplus region capable of supplying electricity beyond its borders.
Investment momentum under Advantage Assam 2.0
The latest review indicates continued government focus on ensuring the success of Advantage Assam 2.0, which serves as the state's flagship investment promotion initiative.
According to Sarma, a substantial share of the investment commitments announced under the programme has progressed through various stages of development. The government is now concentrating on execution, with particular attention on large infrastructure and energy projects.
As investment proposals advance, the power sector is expected to play a central role in Assam's economic strategy, supporting employment growth, industrial activity and energy security over the coming decade.
