With an aim to strengthen its engineering presence in India, Uber India plans to double its product and engineering headcount across tech centers in Bengaluru and Hyderabad.

For filling these key tech roles they will look to hire from top engineering universities in the country and will also focus on doing some lateral hiring in the areas of data science, distributed systems, mobile, artificial intelligence and machine learning among others.

It was almost two and a half years ago that Uber began the journey of building end-to-end urban mobility products for the world from India. Ever since then engineers are working on exciting areas such as customer engagement, rider access (next billion riders), Uber Eats, maps, marketplace and data platforms. They have been able to contribute to the complete lifecycle of the product, which includes design, research, development, operations, data science, and data mapping. Now, to continue the momentum of tech innovation, Uber India wishes to keep on building and strengthening its engineering capabilities.

"We see immense potential in India’s tech talent and have been expanding our India tech presence since the start of this year. In 2018, our tech teams grew by 150 percent and we are focused on doubling down again in 2019 and Uber India tech centers in Bengaluru and Hyderabad are critical to Uber’s global mission of developing urban mobility solutions for everyone,” said Apurva Dalal, Head of Engineering, Uber India.

Uber India’s engineering currently has more than 500 technologists across the two locations. Now, in pursuit of top talent and innovation, Uber aims to hire full stack teams that include product managers, product designers, data scientists, user researchers, mobile, frontend and backend engineers, as well as machine learning/artificial intelligence experts.

For cab-hailing service providers like Ola and Uber, technology lies at the heart of their business and as services like these expand and their demands also increase, it opens more doors of opportunities for engineers. As product managers, product designers, data scientists, user researchers, mobile, frontend and backend engineers and machine learning/artificial intelligence experts remain some of the hot jobs, job seekers have to identify these skills and build on them and vouch for these opportunities.

However, while the high-demand for these capabilities is good news for the rare candidates who have them, it is a challenge for the employers who are looking for these skills. Amidst this scarcity of talent, how Uber India reinforces its engineering team’s commitment to make India a key tech hub for the company is something to look forward to.
