After terminating thousands of employees, Amazon decided to postpone the joining dates of several IIT and IIM hires. Now, the company is resuming layoffs and has confirmed to CNBC that it recently let go of some employees in its Pharmacy business.

According to Amazon spokesperson Brad Glasser, a "small number" of employees in the Amazon Pharmacy division were notified about their layoffs on Thursday. Semafor, which previously reported the news, stated that approximately 80 employees were affected by the layoff.

“Like many businesses, we are always improving our processes, for both quality and efficiency, and identifying how we can deliver on the best customer experience. As a result, we have made the decision to adjust resources and a small number of roles have been eliminated on the Amazon Pharmacy Services team,” Glasser said.

Following the conclusion of the largest layoffs in its 29-year history, Amazon has made further staff reductions. The company laid off 18,000 employees over a period spanning last fall and earlier this year, and in March, it announced an additional 9,000 employees would be let go.

Amazon's CEO Andy Jassy has been actively cutting costs throughout the company as it faces challenges from an economic downturn and slowing revenue growth. Jassy has specifically targeted some of Amazon's riskier ventures, including grocery and devices, while also implementing a freeze on corporate hiring and slowing down warehouse expansion.

Earlier this year, Amazon's health-care businesses experienced the impact of the layoffs. Employees in various units, including the pharmacy, digital health tools, and Halo fitness band divisions, were among those affected by the layoffs, as previously reported by CNBC.

For several years, Amazon has been making efforts to enter the health-care market. In 2020, the company launched its own online pharmacy, which originated from its acquisition of PillPack in 2018.

Amazon also experimented with a telehealth service named Amazon Care, although it later decided to discontinue it. Furthermore, in July, Amazon revealed plans to acquire boutique primary care provider One Medical for $3.9 billion.
