The reverberations of the Juy 18, 2012 violence at Maruti’s Manesar plant are now being felt across Indian academic institutions too. India’s top business schools including a few IIMs are now reviewing their human resource curriculum to re-introduce industrial relations. Personnel Management as an integral part of the curricula was edged out when post liberalization issues such as employee engagement, talent acquisition, compensation benefits took over the HR space. The growth of service sectors to played a major role in IR as a subject taking a back seat. But clashes at Maruti Suzuki have in a way forced a rethink. Institutes such as Tata Institute of Social Sciences and XLRI, Jamshedpur - which are among the handful in the country that offer a range of compulsory courses on personnel management, IR and labour law - are also tracking the incidents to incorporate the emerging trends while revising their curriculum.
