IIDEA protests mass layoffs and new deployment rules at TCS

Union slams 12,261 job cuts, 225 billable-day rule and stalled recruitment at India’s biggest IT firm.
The IT & ITES Democratic Employees Association (IIDEA) staged a demonstration outside Tata Consultancy Services’ Whitefield campus in Bengaluru on Friday, protesting against mass layoffs and new workplace rules, the Hindu reported.
In its statement, the group said TCS had dismissed 12,261 employees and introduced a deployment policy requiring staff to maintain 225 billable days each year. IIDEA argued the measure would increase workload pressures while undermining job security.
The union also raised concerns over hiring delays. It pointed out that more than 500 professionals who received offer letters with July 2025 joining dates were still waiting for confirmation. Many had already resigned from previous roles, leaving them without income or clarity.
“We believe automation and AI should improve work-life balance, not destroy livelihoods. Instead of firing workers, TCS should reskill employees, reduce excessive work hours, and ensure job security during technological transitions,” IIDEA said in its statement, cited by Business Standard.
The association demanded that the company halt layoffs immediately, stop pressuring employees to resign under “false claims”, and provide fair severance, healthcare, and transition support for those affected.
TCS has not publicly responded to the protest, several outlets observed.
