Skoda Volkswagen says few staff likely to exit under India early-retirement plan

Automaker says the voluntary scheme was union-driven and expects only double-digit participation across Pune and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar.
Skoda Auto Volkswagen India expects only a small number of employees to leave under an early-retirement option rolled out at its Pune and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar plants, seeking to allay concerns over potential job losses at its manufacturing operations.
The company said participation in the scheme is likely to remain in the double digits, despite employing around 5,000 people across the two facilities, the majority of them based in Pune. Management stressed that the programme is entirely voluntary and not a precursor to wider workforce reductions.
The early-exit plan has been developed in consultation with the company’s recognised labour union and is open only to union members. According to the management, the initiative follows sustained discussions over the past two and a half years, during which a section of employees had sought options for retirement or career transitions.
“This has been a union-driven request for a limited group of workers and is part of broader efforts to improve operational efficiency,” the company said, adding that the move does not signal a shift in its long-term employment outlook in India.
The clarification comes as workforce changes in the manufacturing sector face heightened scrutiny amid concerns over automation, cost pressures and demand volatility. Skoda Volkswagen said its India operations continue to remain central to the group’s growth and export strategy.
The automaker recently marked 25 years of operations in India and crossed the milestone of producing two million vehicles locally. Its Pune and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar plants together have an annual production capacity of about 320,000 units.
Over the past three years, the company has manufactured around 500,000 vehicles on its India-developed platform, underpinning models across both the Skoda and Volkswagen brands. Sales momentum has strengthened in 2025, with retail volumes rising sharply year-on-year, driven by newer launches in the compact segment.
Company executives have said India is increasingly being positioned as a production and export hub for markets across ASEAN, the Middle East and Australasia, underscoring the group’s continued investment focus even as it fine-tunes workforce structures at specific sites.
