Weekly Round-up (July 21 - July 25): News you cannot miss

This week was marked by the NASSCOM HR Summit 2014 that took place in Chennai and unveiled various interesting insights about the industry. As a part of this summit, Monster India launched the ‘Monster Salary Index India IT Sector Report 2014’ which revealed one of the most astounding facts that the gender pay gap in the IT industry is as high as 29 per cent. As per the Monster Salary Index, the male IT worker receives gross salary of ₹ 359.25 per hour while female receives ₹ 254.04 per hour. On the diversity front, TCS emerged as the largest employer of women amongst the private sector companies. It currently employs 99,875 women employees, just 125 short of the 100,000 mark. On the other hand, unions representing workers at Coal India Ltd, decided to oppose any move to sell a stake in the state-owned company as part of the new government's plan to shore up its finances.

A new trend that was highlighted this week was the ability of certain e-commerce organizations to make their low-level workers significantly wealthy. Office boys, warehouse supervisors, clerks, receptionists and other non-managerial employees of some of India's sharpest ecommerce firms can be wealthy soon, provided their firms offer a buyback or they get listed or there's an M&A activity. While, in his latest visit to India, AirAsia founder Tony Fernandes pointed to an airhostess and announced the company will help her "realise her dream" of becoming a pilot which highlighted the fact that in times of competition, Air Asia has been able to make unusual hiring choices and make the most of it.

Some significant movements that took place this week include; Nikesh Arora joining SoftBank to head the Internet business unit, AS Lakshminarayanan, to head the company's Japan business, Tesco appoints Unilever’s Dave Lewis to take over as CEO, VR Sharma, the Deputy Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (steel business), Jindal Steel and Power, has quit the company, Philips India appointed Sameer Garde as President, Philips Healthcare, South Asia, Former Indian Premier League Commissioner and President and MD of Modi Enterprises, Lalit Modi, joined the advisory board of luxury hospitality chain Aman Resorts and last but not the least, Apollo Tyres appointed Seshu Bhagavathula as the Chief Technology Officer (CTO).
