Women and Child Development department issues advisory stressing safety, accountability and limited exceptions.

The Delhi government has barred late office hours for women employees except in rare and unavoidable circumstances, tightening workplace rules to emphasise safety, dignity and managerial accountability.

In an advisory issued earlier this week, the Women and Child Development department directed all its branches to ensure that women staff are not required or expected to stay beyond normal working hours. Where late work is unavoidable, the department mandated that women employees must be dropped home safely.

“… it is hereby directed that no woman employee shall be required or expected to remain in office beyond normal working hours unless absolutely unavoidable,” the advisory said, PTI reported. It added that in such cases, the concerned branch head or reporting officer would be “personally responsible” for ensuring the employee’s safe return.

The advisory placed clear responsibility on senior officials, asking branch heads to assess in advance whether late sitting is genuinely essential. It cautioned against asking women employees to stay back for routine or non-time-sensitive work that could be taken up on the next working day.

“Remain fully accountable for ensuring that such arrangements are actually made and executed in a timely manner,” the department said, underlining the need for strict oversight when exceptions are made.

The directive also called on officers and branch heads to maintain a “humane, gender-sensitive and responsible managerial approach,” keeping the safety and dignity of women employees foremost.

“This advisory is expected to be complied with in letter and spirit, ensuring that the safety of women employees remains a non-negotiable for all,” it said.

The move comes amid wider scrutiny of workplace safety and conditions for women in government and private offices, with authorities increasingly emphasising employer responsibility, especially during late working hours. Officials indicated that compliance will be closely monitored, signalling limited tolerance for deviations from the new guidelines.
