Kotak Mahindra Bank CEO succession begins as lender shortlists two internal candidates

RBI approval process gets underway as Kotak Mahindra Bank identifies two senior executives to succeed CEO Ashok Vaswani after his term ends in December 2026.
Kotak Mahindra Bank has recommended two internal executives to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) as potential successors to Chief Executive Officer Ashok Vaswani, marking the first formal step in selecting the next leader of India's fourth-largest private sector lender.
According to a Reuters report citing sources familiar with the matter, the bank has submitted the names of executive directors Anup Saha and Paritosh Kashyap for regulatory consideration. The move comes after Vaswani announced in June that he would not seek reappointment when his term expires on December 31, 2026, citing personal reasons.
The succession process is being closely watched by investors and industry observers as the bank seeks to sustain its growth trajectory in an increasingly competitive banking market.
RBI approval process moves into focus
Under Indian banking regulations, lenders are required to propose at least two candidates for the top executive position. The RBI can approve one of the recommended names or ask the bank to submit alternative candidates if it considers the proposed executives unsuitable.
Reuters reported that it could not independently determine which of the two candidates is the bank's preferred choice.
Neither Kotak Mahindra Bank, Anup Saha, nor Paritosh Kashyap responded to Reuters' requests for comment.
Two seasoned insiders emerge as contenders
The two shortlisted executives bring different areas of expertise within the bank's operations.
Key candidates include:
• Anup Saha: Joined Kotak Mahindra Bank in January 2026 after previously leading non-bank lender Bajaj Finance. He currently oversees the bank's retail banking business.
• Paritosh Kashyap: A long-serving Kotak executive who currently heads the lender's wholesale banking operations.
The selection of internal candidates suggests the bank is looking for continuity as it prepares for a leadership transition at a time of expansion and changing market dynamics.
Leadership transition at a critical stage
The appointment carries strategic significance for the lender.
Under Ashok Vaswani, the bank has outlined ambitions to become India's third-largest private sector lender by after-tax profit. The incoming chief executive will be expected to continue executing those growth plans while navigating regulatory requirements, competition from larger private banks and the rapid digitisation of financial services.
Vaswani took charge on January 1, 2024, succeeding founder Uday Kotak, who had led the institution for more than two decades.
The transition also carries symbolic importance because the Kotak family remains the bank's largest shareholder, holding approximately 26% of the lender.
Market watches succession plans closely
Leadership changes at major financial institutions often attract heightened investor attention because of their potential impact on strategy, growth and capital allocation.
Kotak Mahindra Bank's succession planning comes against a backdrop of positive market sentiment. According to Reuters, the bank's shares had risen around 5% over the previous five trading sessions.
The RBI's decision will ultimately determine who takes charge of one of India's most prominent private lenders. Until then, the focus will remain on how the regulator evaluates the two internal contenders and the direction the bank's next leadership team may take.
