Plastic ban costs one lakh jobs- Plastic Association

Since April 2018, the government of India is going strong against the plastic ban and state governments are following the suite. Now the ban has entered to maximum states around the country which has also raised a concern about the job losses. In recent incident workers from various associations and  Karnataka State Plastic Association (KSPA) protested against the state government’s ban on plastic.

According to the protestors, this move from the government has impacted more than one lakh jobs and Rs 20,000 crore.

The federation wants the order to be immediately revoked. According to C R J Janardhan, Senior Vice-President, Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Karnataka produces plastic worth Rs 50,000 crore and out of the whole production 60 per cent can be recycled. The manufacturers claimed their exports are suffering because they are unable to use plastic bags.

It can be recalled that in June this year the government of Maharashtra also decided to implement the ban. During the ban, the plastic manufacturing industry has shared that the statewide plastic ban led in Maharashtra will lead to a loss of up to Rs. 150 Bn and about 3,00,000 jobs will be lost.

Nearly 2,500 members of the Plastic Bags Manufacturers Association of India have already left as they had no other option but to shut shop.

This blanket ban has already caused an enormous number of jobs and it will continue it’s run until the central government doesn’t come up with a smart alternative. Experts’ suggest this ban and job losses will have a massive impact on the GDP.
