Daimler India Commercial Vehicles (DICV) has announced a Rs 4,000 crore investment in Tamil Nadu, aimed at expanding BharatBenz capabilities, strengthening manufacturing and research operations, and enhancing technology readiness. The investment is also expected to create 400 new jobs, reinforcing the company's long-term commitment to India as both a key market and a strategic manufacturing hub.
The announcement was made at the Tamil Nadu Investment Conclave, where the company signed a non-binding facilitation memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the state government.
With the latest commitment, Daimler India's total investment in the country has reached Rs 14,500 crore, according to the company.
Investment targets manufacturing, R&D and future readiness
The fresh capital will be deployed to strengthen BharatBenz's manufacturing ecosystem and support future technology requirements.
According to DICV, the investment will focus on:
- Expanding BharatBenz product and manufacturing capabilities
- Enhancing research and development infrastructure
- Building technology readiness for future commercial vehicle requirements
- Strengthening localisation and supply chain capabilities
- Creating approximately 400 new employment opportunities
The company said the investment aligns with growing demand from sectors such as infrastructure, logistics, mining, construction and passenger transportation.
BharatBenz scales with India's infrastructure growth
Torsten Schmidt, Managing Director and CEO of Daimler India Commercial Vehicles, said India's expanding infrastructure and logistics ecosystem is driving demand for more reliable and efficient commercial vehicles.
He noted that customers increasingly require trucks and buses offering higher uptime, improved safety, stronger reliability and better operating efficiency.
Schmidt added that through BharatBenz, the company is continuing to strengthen products, localisation, service readiness and parts availability while reinforcing India's role within Daimler Truck's global manufacturing and supply network.
India facility remains a strategic global hub
Daimler India operates a 400-acre integrated manufacturing and R&D facility at Oragadam near Chennai, one of the company's largest operations outside Germany.
Key operational highlights include:
- Approximately 92% localisation of BharatBenz product value through the Indian supplier ecosystem
- More than 220,000 BharatBenz trucks and buses operating across India
- A nationwide network of 420 dealers
- Exports of over 75,000 India-made trucks and buses
- Supply of more than 330 million parts to over 70 international markets
- Transmission exports from Chennai to Daimler Truck manufacturing facilities in Germany
The company said BharatBenz continues to serve freight movement, logistics, construction, mining and passenger mobility segments across the country.
Commercial vehicle demand supports expansion plans
Daimler India said the commercial vehicle industry remains closely tied to India's economic growth trajectory.
Investments in highways, industrial corridors, ports, mining projects, logistics infrastructure and public transport systems are creating sustained demand for trucks and buses capable of delivering lower operating costs, higher efficiency and improved reliability.
The company views India not only as a domestic growth market but also as a critical sourcing, engineering and manufacturing base within Daimler Truck's global operations.
