International HR Day: Scaling people, powering growth- HR’s strategic role in a borderless world

As businesses expand across borders and adapt to digital-first operations, the role of Human Resources has evolved into a powerful lever for global growth, innovation, and cultural cohesion. On this International HR Day, People Matters explores how forward-thinking HR leaders are shaping the future of work across geographies.
Talent Mobility: Beyond Relocation
Moglix, which is actively growing its presence in the Middle East and expanding its global supply chain financing platform, Credlix, demonstrates how HR plays a pivotal role in scaling mindfully. “Talent mobility is no longer just about relocating people,” says Saumya Khare, Head HR, Moglix. “It's about creating opportunities for individuals to gain exposure, collaborate across borders, and build shared knowledge that drives innovation. Whether through virtual teams or international assignments, mobility helps unlock leadership potential and strengthens our global outlook.”
Cross-Cultural Integration: Building Bridges
Khare further explains that as companies enter new markets, culture becomes as important as capability. “We ensure our people feel connected to the company’s core values while respecting and learning from local ways of working. It's a continuous process of listening, adapting, and building inclusion into the everyday.”
Richard Lobo, Chief People Officer at Tech Mahindra, echoes this, stating, “Our people strategy is deeply embedded in our business roadmap, fuelling talent mobility, leadership development, and cross-cultural collaboration across our footprint in 90+ countries.”
Compliance as Strategy
Compliance is often seen as administrative, but leading HR teams approach it strategically. “Thoughtful navigation of local regulations helps build trust and long-term credibility in new markets,” says Khare,” says Khare. “HR partners closely with other functions to ensure we’re building systems that are both compliant and scalable.”
Barbara Matthews, Chief People Officer at Remote, reinforces the complexity: “Employment laws, tax obligations, and compliance requirements differ widely from country to country – and getting them wrong can carry real risk.” According to Matthews, HR must localise benefits, expectations, and experiences to remain competitive, while still maintaining a cohesive company culture.
The AI Shift in HR
Casey Bailey, Head of People at Deel, adds that technology is transforming HR operations. “In a fully remote, distributed team like ours—across 117 countries—HR plays a crucial role in delivering how we hire, pay, and support talent globally.” She adds that AI will greatly impact how HR operates from strategy to administration and will turn global challenges into opportunities to scale more seamlessly.”
The HR Mindset for the Future
According to Matthews, global growth fundamentally shifts HR's focus. “It’s about developing systems to find, hire, and retain the best talent—not just in one city or country, but across a global talent pool. That means building processes that support remote onboarding, fair compensation, and long-term career development.”
Lobo sums it up: “As businesses navigate complex regulatory landscapes and shifting talent dynamics, HR must shape inclusive, adaptive, and technology-enabled workplaces of the future.”
HR at the Helm of Change
Ranjith K P, senior director of human Resources for India and SAARC at Palo Alto Networks, says focusing on inclusion, diversity, and cross-cultural integration helps us build a high-performing global workforce that feels connected by shared purpose and a strong sense of belonging.
For him, in a world that’s more interconnected and threat-prone than ever, HR must champion both people and protection. “Our people strategy is inseparable from our cybersecurity mission; together, they power our ability to grow responsibly and lead globally.”
Kavita Shrivastav, Director – Human Resources, Hitachi Payment Services, sees HR’s role in shaping agile yet compliant policies to enable continuous learning and build resilient teams. HR ensures people and purpose stay aligned.
“It influences team structures, inculcates leadership development, and cultivates a purpose-driven workplace for every employee across the organisation, regardless of the location. In today’s times, HR is the catalyst that transforms cultural diversity into a competitive edge and compliance into trust-building communities of growth.”
In a world that’s more interconnected yet more complex than ever, HR isn’t just keeping up—it’s leading the way. From scaling global teams to creating inclusive cultures and future-proofing talent strategies, HR professionals are now architects of growth and resilience. This HR Day, the message is clear: the future of business is being built by people, and HR is at the helm.
