Create communication platforms to suit needs
Organizations understand that people today are no more only interested in working in a workplace that is paternalistic, rather they want to be treated as colleagues, command a voice in the real running of the company, want to be a part of the shared vision, and want to feel part of the creation of the vision and direction of the company, as well as be included in the decision making process. In the last ten years, many companies have started ‘Shadow Boards’, for example, at companies like Godrej and Mahindra & Mahindra, young high potential leaders work in Shadow Boards that actually advice the main Boards of these companies on how they should run a company. This is an interesting concept that companies are using to allow voice to the young generation.
Further, companies have increasingly begun to adopt all the practices that the young people bring to the workplace. For example, the ease with which they work and collaborate with the community using the Internet and Web 2.0. Thus, organizations are creating communication platforms that suit their needs – while the earlier version was through portals; the new version is through internal Facebook. So, they are now embracing social media and technology to allow people the opportunity to express through forums that the new generation is familiar with is essential and important.
