Engineering marks highest apprenticeship outlook for period January-June 2022: Report

Among the cities, Chennai topped the list with 75% NAO (a 10% growth) which is followed by Ahmedabad standing at 72% and Delhi at 70%.

Against 64% in the previous HY and 58% in January, 72% of the employers are likely to increase their hiring of apprentices from January to June 2022.

According to the findings of the latest survey conducted by TeamLease, despite the Omicron wave at least 10 out of 18 industries have increased their apprentice hiring by more than 10%. The survey titled, Apprenticeship Outlook revealed that engineering has recorded the highest (82%) outlook followed by automobiles and ancillaries (74%) and retail (70%).  

A report carried out by the Economic Times stated that Automobile (16%) and Agriculture (15%) experienced the highest year on year growth rate.

Commenting on the findings, Sumit Kumar, Vice President - NETAP, TeamLease Skill University said, “When it comes to adoption of apprenticeship in India, the last five years have been very rewarding. Employer sentiment has drastically improved, with more employers coming to the forefront and hiring more apprentices. The finding of the report that 72% employers will hire more this fiscal is fortifying the sentiment further, and indicating that the adoption is here to stay and grow.”

He further added that the partnerships between academia and employers need to be boosted to promote the efficiency of apprenticeship. He said, “A tripartite association between academics, industry, and youth will go a long way in boosting these programs. We have the potential to reach 10 million apprentices in 10 years, provided necessary actions are undertaken.”
