A great candidate experience is not only a requirement to win it is imperative to beat the competition

In an exclusive conversation with Sean Behr, CEO of Fountain we discuss the present and future of hiring in India and how digital tools and experience are critical to its success.

Looking at the larger global economic forces today, how will the Indian hiring landscape evolve in the coming year?

India is poised to become the third-largest economy in the world by 2030, and its projected annual nominal gross domestic product growth will average 6.3% during this ascent. This growth will come from a 600 million (and growing) labour force. A sharp rise in job opportunities has been witnessed in the blue-collar industry, with tier 2 cities becoming the epicentres for such opportunities. We predict this growth trend will continue in 2023, with demand coming primarily from sectors like logistics and mobility, e-commerce, facility management, information technology, retail and quick service restaurants, manufacturing, and banking and financial services.

The hiring landscape will need to adapt rapidly to these scale-up challenges. We predict that in 2023, we will see these trends:

  •  Increased Automation and Artificial Intelligence based hiring solutions will take centre stage
  •  More and more applicants will start and complete their job applications online instead of offline modes.

What is the biggest challenge in front of recruiters today regarding hiring the best? How do you suggest TA heads evolve their hiring practices in response to evolving employee preferences?

Manual operations, overreliance on intermediaries/agencies, inefficient tools, lack of brand awareness, etc., are a few challenges we see come up over and over when talking to our customers. Companies need to speed up their hiring to compete effectively. In reality, each day you remove from the hiring process improves the hire rate. With hundreds of companies vying for the same talent pool's attention, hiring managers need to automate and streamline the candidate experience and save time for recruitment teams to scale with growing hiring needs. And companies need advanced analytics to provide end-to-end process visibility so managers can make swift, data-driven decisions.

Agility is an important organizational priority. How does Fountain enable recruiters to respond to this business demand by improving the pace of hiring suitable candidates?

What role does candidate experience play in how effectively companies can hire the right people?

A great candidate experience is not only a requirement to win; it is imperative to beat the competition vying for the same candidate pools.

Candidates say, "I want you to be transparent and upfront with me. I want to know — during the application process — the total potential earnings, an accurate job description, the actual hours I'll be working, and the tasks and duties required of me."

The current generation of the labour pool in India is very smartphone savvy. They are used to instant communication with Whatsapp, Instagram, etc. They can order food, groceries or movie tickets on their mobile phones at the click of a button. But when applying for jobs, they are made to go through a manual, outdated process. Candidates have the right to expect an easy, engaging, mobile-friendly experience. They want to use their mobile phones to apply for a different job during their lunch break, do a video interview that same afternoon, and get a job offer by the end of the day. That faster time-to-hire is pretty enticing for workers reassessing where they want to be in life.
