Capgemini India accelerates promotions to battle attrition

In order to battle high employee attrition and its image for dismal salary increments early last year appear, Capgemini India has stepped the gas on its promotions and is also relooking its employee offerings.

The IT major has also conceptualized a new HR strategy, one that borrows from Albert Einstein's iconic equation, E=mc2. For Capgemini, that translates into employee engagement (E) is equal to motivation, compensation and career.

With these in mind, the company launched an accelerated and agile career progression plan. As per Capgemini India CEO Ashwin Yardi, the company has moved to a quarterly promotion cycle keeping in mind that employees today want more agility and speed in their careers.

To this effect, the number of promotions in the firm in the last year, at 19,000, was the highest in the last decade.

In addition, the company is also trying to ensure employees have the right skills to make rapid strides. In the last two years, it has launched a massive skilling programme, under which it trained almost 60,000 employees in newer technologies.

The employee feedback mechanism has also been revamped to make it more agile. Randomly, employee groups get different sets of questions which could be about the workplace, their careers, their managers, and the company tries to address them quickly. Further, it has also launched a programme for addressing its managers called the agile managers' course, wherein it is looking at reskilling them, to make them in tune with the new workforce.

The steps are in the same direction as its announcement last December to raise fresher salary by 20 percent as it increases its headcount in the country. The IT firm expects to add around 25,000 more people to its India team on a gross basis, which includes both freshers and lateral hires. The company currently has close to 106,000 employees in India, which is more than half of its global workforce. By focusing on reskilling employees just like its peers such as TCS, Infosys, Cognizant and Wipro have been doing in new technologies such as automation, artificial intelligence, and machine learning, it hopes to retain the talent it attracts and stand its own ground among the IT majors in the country.
