Piyush Chhabra | HR Business Partner | Microsoft

Piyush Chhabra plays the strategic role of balancing business needs and employee motivations as the HR Business Partner at Microsoft.

Over the last 10 years, he has also focused on advancing this critical skill set by coaching numerous business leaders and employees to become the best version of themselves. He is also a strong believer in keeping inclusion at the centre of what he does and has made it his mission to remove any potential biases that may seep in.

Beginning: Choosing HR as a passion

For Piyush, it was important to become a catalyst that empowers people to be their best selves and perform their best work. This mission is a source of intrinsic joy that drove him towards HR as a career. “Even if I am able to change the life of one individual, it is a victory for me,” he said.

Creating impact and battling the challenges

Piyush believes that identifying and training employees in the skills of the future remain the biggest challenges facing HR today. At Microsoft, to address this, they are working closely with business leaders to perform a strategic workforce planning exercise where they will ascertain the business needs of the future. This will then highlight the vital skillsets to succeed in these key areas, and they will then initiate targeted interventions to build those capabilities.

For HR, the past year was indeed a reality check to be mindful as they are in the business of building people’s careers. The accelerated growth in the tech industry marked a period of transformation, and skill sets evolved like never before. Undoubtedly, upskilling strategies have to be aligned with the future of business.

Journeying with Are You In The List Awards

The entire process helped me take a step back and introspect. It covered all aspects including analytical thinking, HR domain knowledge, case-based thinking, and learnings from the work I have done in these last few years,” said Piyush when describing his experience with People Matters Are You In The List awards powered by Aon.

Not only did it enable him to think deeply about the kind of impact he has created, but it also provided him with learnings on where he could have done better. The Adept report, especially, helped him understand where to focus more and has provided the right guidance and direction towards enhancing his leadership capabilities.

What’s Next?

A strong believer in having a positive outlook to drive positive outcomes, Piyush is all set for 2024 which he predicts to be a diverse and challenging year driven by technology.
