Chatbots: The Latest Technology Fad in HR

Remember J.A.R.V.I.S - Marvel superhero, Iron Man’s digital personal assistant? How many of us thought of him as a fictional fantasy? Well, with the pace at which technology has advanced over the years, getting your own version of J.A.R.V.I.S. is no longer a fantasy! In fact, last year Facebook founder & CEO, Mark Zuckerberg even announced his wish to build a simple Artificial Intelligence bot that could help him run his home!

When it comes to workplaces, professionals worldwide concur to the need to have technology ease processes. One such area is the HR function in a number of organizations that has actually gone ahead and digitized its work with great efficiency with the help of chatbots. Chatbots are computer programmes that are designed to simulate conversations with human users over the internet through computers or mobile devices.

Companies like InMobi, Bank Bazaar and Yes Bank are a few of the first ones to have integrated chatbots into their HR functions. These automated virtual assistants are designed to take over many of the critical as well as time-consuming HR tasks, leaving HR heads and managers with more time to take up more strategic work within their function. A case in point being HR SaaS solution company, PeopleStrong which launched India’s first HR chatbot called ‘Jinie’. Jinie plays the role of an employee’s personal work assistant, and also helps solve HR-related queries such as applying for leaves, collating and completing employee data, answering company policy related FAQs – Jinie can help an employee with all of that and more.

Performance management, one of the biggest and most time-consuming HR activities, is also set to see a bot revolution. Instead of waiting for six months or a whole year to receive feedback from employees on their work, bots help facilitate feedback in real-time, in a transparent manner without back and forth human intervention. Lengthy and tedious appraisal forms are getting replaced by feedback sharing through an automated chat mechanism.

As per PeopleStrong Co-founder and CEO, Pankaj Bansal’s estimate, at least 30 million of the 100 million people in HR functions will be actively using chatbots to ease their work by 2020. With easy access to a range of employee and performance related information, bots are all set to making life simpler and change the way we work.
