Using games to personalize the future of learning

Designing learning journeys that are contextualized for the organization and putting the learner at the center of the whole learning system is the key to successful learning interventions.

Games create engagement – a necessity for any learning experience. Gamification is a powerful tool for catalyzing attention, focus and investment. The modern society is flooded with information. In order to handle this amount of information, it is important to make them excited about the learning program. Learners are not going to undertake even the most wonderfully designed non-game intervention if they are not interested.

Why game-based learning

Online learning should not become classroom-style learning on a digital platform. The problem with a classroom-style format is a lack of personalization in learning and its attempt to make ‘one size fit all’. At KNOLSKAPE, we are currently designing learning journeys that are contextualized for the organization. A learner goes through the journey as if he or she is going through a real world problem. Relevance should be made clear through contextualization of the environment and that is how people will know what’s in it for them.

If there is no engagement, there is no learning. As learning professionals, we need to see what we can learn from the successful small and big games that have cracked the art of continuous engagement and retention. Such games have created something magical or at least captivating, and established habit, so everyday a gamer wants to play even without any ‘real’ incentives like knowledge or career advancement. But there is feedback and incentive of achievement; the gamer feels accomplished about moving up to the next level. The question is – what can we do as learning professionals to generate that kind of commitment?

Immersive gamification

Immersive gamification is the first design pillar of engaging learning solutions. Gamification is really a magnet that attracts learners, especially millennials with the convenience of anytime and anywhere. Millennials don’t have the patience to sit in a classroom for 8 hours and be spoken to. They like responsive systems as they are keen to contribute, voice their opinion and showcase their talent. This is the basis for knowledge sharing platforms like Quora where so many of them participate enthusiastically. The learning systems being used by organizations typically don’t allow such back and forth participation. They tend to be boxed and there is no opportunity of learning through creating and contributing. We need to understand that receiving knowledge alone is not learning; there is also learning in opportunities to add on to knowledge. ?

Leverage Skill Analytics

The challenge that L&D professionals have in common almost across the board is that learning and performance are still two isolated parameters. It is very difficult to track the impact of a learning program on performance in the sense of business output. As learning becomes more digital, new learning technologies leverage skill analytics to track behavioral changes and provide accurate assessments, so learners are able to accelerate their learning processes and strengthen critical thinking. This, in turn, results in exceptional ROI. ?

Learning a little – Anytime, Anywhere

At KNOLSKAPE, we believe that bite-sized learning is the right size. Easy to understand content delivered seamlessly across mobiles and laptops, along with an element of fun and convenience puts learning where it belongs – in the hands of the user.

It’s time we put the learner at the center of the whole learning system and let them choose. This creates a feeling of empowerment and the learners not only feel engaged but are also respected for the freedom to make their own choice. In fact, virtual and augmented reality have the potential of completely transforming the way we learn and KNOLSKAPE labs is where we are working on creating exciting learning solutions on these platforms.
