Technology will strengthen the gig economy- OYO CHRO

Organizations are making high skills and knowledgeable workers as their integral part though they are not full-time gig workers, shared Dinesh Ramamurthi, Chief Human Resources Officer, OYO Hotels and Homes at People Matters TechHR Conference while delivering his special address on ‘Managing Work in a Gig Economy.’

The OYO CHRO is batting big for the gig economy and how managing the workforce in Gig economy is the need of the hour. According to him, both the parties, the organization, and the workers are equal beneficiaries of the gig economy scenario.

He said, “Employers have benefits of the vast talent pool, scalability and they save costs while the employee has benefits of freedom and flexibility.”

The contingent workforce is rising and becoming more diverse to include agencies, freelancers, and gig workers. At the same time, digital platforms are facilitating this change with a marginal rise of the working-age population across the globe.

Ramamurthi feels that in most of the regular jobs, organizations control what an employee does. Many people don’t have their freedom, and that is why they take the freelance opportunity to unleash their creativity part-time with other organizations.

OYO deals with hotel owners, travel agents, kitchen owners, photographers, content writers, architects, and interior designers.

“Promoting gig workforce is a key growth driver in OYO, and that leads us to become the third-largest hotel chain in the world. We bank on developing technology and process to promote and strengthen the gig workforce in the economy,” he said.

A blended workforce on the rise

Usually, the gig workers have been kept at a safe distance, but the industry is witnessing a change across sectors. More and more companies are adopting a blended workforce of contractors and permanent employees, which will lead to better management of workers in the gig economy.

Concluding his session, the OYO CHRO shared few tips of managing the gig-workers, which consists of rewarding them on a timely basis, continuous training for the job, timely payouts, and promoting high-quality outcomes.

It can be recalled that the 2018 Global Human Capital Trends report sounds a wake-up call for organizations. The report states that the reality of a social enterprise demands a fundamental pivot on how organizations do business today and how they prepare for the human capital challenges of the future. Gen-Z, the next generation of the employable population that will soon be around 472 million of the 1.3 billion Indians, is another major force that would drive changes in the employer-employee relationship, particularly with respect to gig work.
