In a bid to expand its team, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) would be hiring 500 engineers. Apparently, through this, the company wants to increase its focus on new technologies included augmented reality and virtual reality.

“We are looking at AR and VR for now. We will hire fresh talent, but also we are heavily investing in upskilling and reskilling our existing employees to contribute to the changing demands,” said Kiranmai Pendyala, chief operating officer-HR, AMD.

A few years from now, AMD had carried out a similar exercise when it had started working on the game console. “We had set up the Radeon Technologies group to exclusively work in the graphics space, and identified machine learning and virtual reality as new growth sectors for us,” Pendyala said. At that point in time, they did not have the required skillset amongst its own employees in India, and hence got people from the US.

AMD only has about 300 employees working in the software segment. Majority of its employees work in the hardware sector. Like, in the last exercise, AMD would also be sourcing talent from top universities in USA, apart from hiring fresh candidates from IITs and IIIT Hyderabad.
