In less than two months of being elevated as the regional general manager of Asia Pacific region of ride-hailing firm Uber, Amit Jain has been given more autonomy to run the region as he will now report directly to Uber COO Barney Harford.

In May this year, the US-based company had promoted their India Chief Amit Jain as the head of Asia Pacific Business. At that time, Jain reported to Andrew Macdonald, who led Latin America and Apac region for the company. Since then, Andrew Macdonald has been appointed to lead Uber’s business development and rides operations for the US, Canada and Latin America.

Jain will now independently handle APAC reporting to Harford.

In a statement to ET, Andrew Macdonald, Vice-President, Uber, said that Jain has built a phenomenal business for Uber in India, demonstrating leadership in a market that is absolutely critical to Uber’s global growth ambitions and long-term success.

Andrew stated, “As the head of APAC for the rides business, he can now extend his impact across new geographies and teams, to help us navigate new shared competitive pressures in ANZ, and new strategic momentum around unlocking North Asia.”

He added that there are a lot of learnings from India and South Asia that can help Uber successfully navigate through this dynamic business environment.

Jain who was the India and South Asia President of Uber led Uber’s Indian operations for about three years. Last month, Uber subsequently announced the appointment of Pradeep Parameswaran as new President of India and South Asia. As a key member of Uber’s regional leadership team, Pradeep will be responsible for leading the Rides operation to new heights as the preferred mobility platform for riders and drivers across India and South Asia.
